The Capital of Ukraine is the Cheapest City for Travel

Kiev is ahead of the curve! Kiev is the first in the ranking of the most low-cost cities for travelling, and it is not the first time the capital of Ukraine with its cheap prices is ranked first in this kind of listings. The list was compiled by the British tour operator Hoppa. The company calculated the average sum that the tourist spends per day in many European cities. The day in New York turned out to be the most expensive for average tourist. For a day of such a trip you will have to spend about 346 pounds or 13 thousand hryvnia. Trip to Kiev will be no less interesting, but much cheaper. Ancient architecture, rich cultural life, a lot of entertainment – all this comes with a bonus of democratic (as for Europe) prices.

Therefore, rest in Ukrainian capital is what you will remember for a long time, but you do not need much money for it. And here is why!

One day in Kiev

“The price of one day in Kiev is 2500 thousand hryvnia or 65 pounds,” – said the British travel company. This includes: housing rental, breakfast, lunch and dinner, drinks. According to this rating, Kiev turned out to be the cheapest city to have lunch in out of 100 cities analyzed. At the same time, by the cost of housing rent, Ukrainian capital was on the fifth place among other low-cost variants. It would be cheaper to spend the night in Denpasar (Indonesia), Antalya (Turkey), Phuket (Thailand) and Jakarta (Indonesia).

Accommodation in Kiev

According to Hoppa, overnight stay in Kiev costs about 42 pounds, which is about 1600 UAH for a double room. It should be noted that if you have time to search, you can find accommodation even cheaper than it is indicated in the rating. For those who prefer convenience, there are many options of more expensive apartments. If we speak about the cost of the hotels, Kiev with prices starting from £42 per night is on the fifth place in the top ten cheapest cities. For those who want to have a luxury rest, they advise to go to New York, Venice or Copenhagen. 1 day in the hotel there costs more than 200 pounds.

Coffee in Kiev

The cheapest prices for coffee are in coffee shops on wheels. In the cafe it is a little bit more expensive. Depending on the status of the place, the cost of espresso ranges from 14 to 30 hryvnia (0.5 pounds). In the rating of the British company, the price of a favorite drink by many is about 1.19 pounds and it is the third place in the list of cheapest cities. Hence we can conclude that they took not the cheapest cafes or restaurants for comparison.

Beer and wine

As calculated by the British, the price of beer is not very low – about 3.7 pounds. Again, it is unclear what drink was compared; with it, Kiev took 9th place out of the 10 cheapest places where you can taste beer. Although for us as locals it is very strange. We assure that even in the most expensive places a glass (0.5 liters) of beer will cost no more than 3 euros.

The wine with the price of about £4 turned out to be the third of the 10 positions in the rating of low prices. This, by the way, is almost 160 hryvnia. Also, Ukrainian capital has got bronze for the cheapness of alcoholic cocktails. On average, their price is about three pounds.

The Big Mac Index

Big Mac has already become a price benchmark for comparison throughout the world. A sandwich with beef steaks plus a couple of positions from the traditional fast food menu in Kiev costs 2.11 pounds. It cannot be cheaper! So, in Caracas (Venezuela), one has to pay 22 pounds for such fast food!  Buns and French fries were the most expensive in this ranking.

Lunch

10 pounds for a full dinner! With this sum of money foreign tourist can have a hearty lunch both in Kiev and in Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). For counting, the British agency calculated as if it was for two portions.

After all, it is assumed that at least two tourists travel together. The most expensive meal is in Caracas (Venezuela) – more than 100 pounds.

The Kiev Taxi

With the cost of its taxi, Kiev is ranked six. Five kilometers will cost almost two pounds. The cheapest taxi is in Cairo (Egypt); it is a little less than one pound.

Expensive treatment

If tourists want to save money, they need to have excellent health. After all, medicine in Kiev is not cheap. The price for a short visit to a doctor or taking antibiotics in Kiev did not hit even the top ten cheapest.

It is worth noting that even without any ratings the city has always attracted tourists and travelers. In most cases guests of the capital are satisfied with the impressions and try to visit the glorious city of Kiev again and again.

Taking into account the above prices, foreign tourists especially from Western Europe and America truly feel like kings; having exchanged $1,000 for 27,000 UAH (exchange rate as of February 21, 2013), which is 2.5 monthly salaries for the average Kyivan, you can party like a star.

Therefore, in Kiev foreign tourists can afford enjoying the best restaurants, spas, taxi, taking all sorts of excursions, non-stop bars and generally feel like kings of the world.
