NSC Olympic Stadium in Kiev
- The stadium located in the center of Kiev on the slopes of Cherepanova Hill, was opened on August 12, 1923 to hold the Second All-Ukrainian Olympics; the first name of the site was “Red Stadium named after Lev Trotsky”. A year later, Trotsky’s name was removed from the title. Kiev team “Zheldor” (now “Locomotive”) held home matches here.
- In 1934, Kiev received the status of the capital of the Ukrainian SSR; this resulted in decision to renew the city main stadium. The opening ceremony of the Republican Stadium was scheduled for June 22, 1941, but because of the War and the German occupation, it had to be postponed until 1944. However, the Germans opened a stadium in 1942 and held matches there.
- In the 60’s the stadium was renamed Central Stadium, and its capacity exceeded 100 thousand visitors. Over 102 000 fans witnessed the victory of Dynamo Kyiv over Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup-1975 Super Cup. The brace of Oleg Blokhin resulted in Kyivans’ victory in return game – 2:0.
- Before the 1980 Olympics, the stadium underwent another reconstruction and again got the name Republican. During the Olympic Games, seven matches of the football tournament, including the quarterfinals were held here.
- The stadium got its present name back in 1996. For today it is the main arena of the Ukrainian national team, and in recent years it has hosted home matches of the Dynamo Kyiv.
- The last of the reconstructions was carried out before the final stage of EURO-2012. Olympic Stadium hosted five matches of the European Championship, including the Final.
